Park Gate is a veritable Oasis in the Dubai Desert Two things struck me when I read about the Park Gate in Dubai. Firstly it looked absolutely gorgeous, and secondly, it uses solar power! Yes, designer Adrain Smith and Gordon Gill believed that a building need not be hot just because it is situated in a desert. And how they managed to keep this building cool in the sweltering heat? They used solar panels. The Park Gate consists of six curving towers that have been covered by a canopy of solar powered panels. There also are hanging gardens and reflecting pools that function as thermal sinks. The arched structure protects the building from direct rays of the sun, and makes use of the cool breeze coming from the sea for ventilation. The thermal salt water pool absorbs the heat during day and releases it in the night for cooler temperatures. Plants that do not need much watering or those that are salt-water tolerant have been planted in abundance. All these things reduce the temperature by almost 10-15 degrees! The place boasts of a total area of 4.7million square feet and consists of offices, shops, and even a hotel. This oasis in the middle of the desert is perfect for both work and pleasure. |
