Violent racing games influence teens Posted: 04 Sep 2010 01:45 AM PDT Racing games would be influencing young people to become “fast and furious” at the helm, the study suggests that relates the actions of virtual games to road hazards. It is not just the famous Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and Carmageddon, whose objectives include driving at high speed and in some cases, run down pedestrians. The research was conducted by Kathleen Beullens, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. She wanted to determine if games in which users can violate traffic laws, and are even encouraged to do this, similar attitudes encouraged in real life. However, the answer she got was “maybe.” The study surveyed in 2008, about two thousand young people, both men and women between 16 and 17 years, who responded in the questionnaire how often they were involved with this type of game. Two years later, he asked the members of that group who had taken driver’s license just how they felt incited to take risks when driving. More than normal, apparently. Although it has not found any connection between drinking and driving and premature exposure to racing games (16 and 17 years), the survey affirms the existence of the relationship between this ratio and driving dangerously. Americans go crazy because of slow computers Posted: 04 Sep 2010 01:25 AM PDT Research shows that 51% of Americans scream, hit the keyboard, screen or mouse when the computer is very slow. A survey conducted by Harris Interactive on request from the manufacturer of Intel shows that 80% of Americans are frustrated while waiting for computers to respond to commands, and more than half (51%) admits to have done something “unusual” because of impatience related to slowness of technological products. This kind of stress he was baptized by Intel of “Hourglass Syndrome”, referring to classic icon that indicates the need to wait. Among respondents who said they had taken steps “unusual” when an equipment is not kept pace with them, 62% said they had yelled or cursed aloud, 29% admitted they had beaten in the mouse and 24% said they had struck the computer screen or keyboard. The study also showed that the behavior does not occur only when people are alone. Among those who have already taken action or have seen someone acting inappropriately in public because of frustrations with technology, 70% said they had seen the attitude from strangers, 46% saw occur with family members or friends, and colleagues watched 33% of work. The loss of emotional control is not mere impatience, since many people told that because of the slowness of the computer or internet connection already lost the opportunity to participate in an online sale, buy plane tickets or tickets to concerts and sporting events. Twitter grows due to mobile platforms Posted: 04 Sep 2010 01:06 AM PDT The number of users of the microblogging service Twitter just keeps growing. Created in 2006, the site has 145 million accounts, less than five months after reaching the mark of 100 million entries. The information was released on Thursday (2) by the chief executive, Evan Williams, in a blog post on the official product. He noted particularly the growth in access to the service through mobile devices. Since April, when the first conference company focused on developers, there was an increase of 62% of the total mobile users. For him, the trend is a result of the investment the company has made in recent months to be on all mobile platforms. A company’s strategy was to seek a similar approach with Twitter for BlackBerry application developed by RIM, and Twitter for Android. This week, the company launched Twitter to iPad, which utilizes unique features such as screen size and fluidity of the interface of Apple‘s multitouch tablet. “Today, 16% of all new Twitter users get into mobile devices, compared to 5% before the launch of our first mobile application with the Twitter brand,” says the executive. Williams pointed out that while applications for smartphones are important, there is still a fairly large number of people accessing Twitter on mobile phones through the mobile version of the site in the browser itself or by SMS. IKEA Launches its Pre Owned Products Online in Sweden Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:27 PM PDT The luxury goods market has become significantly large today but the demand and the market for bargain products is much larger, particularly in terms of volume. There are a large segment of buyers who are eagerly awaiting to find some discounted furniture at cut rate prices. There is good news for them. They do not have to look around for bargains but can go straight to the biggest producers of cheap home furnishings, IKEA. From August 28 they have started selling pre owned IKEA products online in Sweden. Once the logistics are in place, similar facilities can be provided in its foreign outlets. Peter Agnefall, CEO of IKEA was very happy with the new experiment. He said it was fun. But he also cautioned that only time will tell if the experiment succeeds or not. He was of the opinion that the concept was a perfect fit with the environmentally friendly ethos of the company. He reiterated that the company took its environmental responsibility for how their products are used in the longer term. There is another view of the cynics who see it only as an attempt by the company to take control of the second hand market and compliment it with their new product sales. Last year they had forced a website devoted to used IKEA goods, iloveikea.se to change to billyandfriends.se |
HP Skyline 2020 Competition Draws Out Noteworthy Designs & Concepts Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:22 PM PDT HP had organized a competition dubbed "The City and the Skyline". The initiative was a response to the growing crises of water, housing, food and energy. The amazing vertical farm took first place in the HP Skyline 2020 Competition with the objective to reinvent India’s skyline. The project was, no doubt, very appropriate and the response was equally enthusiastic. The multi tiered self-sufficient vertical farm is composed of modular housing units that can be added as needed. Apart from the winning design the competition yielded some truly noteworthy designs. The thinking was really out of the box and it challenged the traditional notion of what a skyline is supposed to look like. HP had managed to get top class jurors that included big names like Christopher Charles Beninger, Patrik Scumacher, Sen Kapadia and Hirante Welandawe. It was the credibility of the jurors that inspired confidence amongst the designer community and the competition which was launched in April of 2010 could garner over 300 quality and serious entries. The national winner of the competition was "City and the Skyline" by Anto Gloren and Sayali Athale of Pune, India and received a HP Workstation and a HP Large Format Design jet Printer, while the four zonal winners received a printer Via: AecWorldXP, Bustler |
