Najjar & Najjar Create a Futuristic Home in Vienna for IT Entrepreneur Posted: 07 Sep 2010 12:03 AM PDT Should an IT Entrepreneur's home be any different from other people's homes? I guess it should be more high tech and futuristic to say the least. Yes, that is the right answer as we came across Villa F in Vienna, Austria. Najjar & Najjar are the architects for this futuristic project. The owner who is a passionate fan of Mac computer designs and Lamborghinis, had asked the architects and designers that the place he lived and worked in should reflect his passions. He was also particular about integrating all the latest trends in home technologies in his new home. And the result has been that you have Plasma TVs jumping out of seemingly common furniture, a large aquarium with computer generated graphics, LED lighting and sound systems turned on and off with the help of a mouse click- everything in this futuristic place is digitally maneuvered. The final design does have that feel of a sci-fi movie set and yet promises comfort and luxury. You have views of nature that would keep you relaxed while you work. I must warn you that this house is not for those who are disorganized by nature. But if you are the organized type you will feel that the home is well conceived and equally well executed. |
The Royal Mail Launches Intelligent Stamps With New Technology Posted: 07 Sep 2010 12:00 AM PDT After the smart cards it is the turn of the stamps to become intelligent or that is what the Royal Mail claims about its newest launch. The Royal Mail said intelligent stamps “mark the next step in the evolution of our stamps, bringing them firmly into the 21st Century.” You can view the new stamp through a smartphone and are led to a related webpage. To see it on the phone you will require Junaio image recognition application variations of which has been developed for iPhones and Android smartphones. These new stamps are part of Royal Mail's Great British Railway edition. While viewing the first stamp the viewer will be directed to a short film showing Bernard Cribbins reading Auden's famous poem The Night Mail. The poem was written in 1936 for the Post Offices own blockbuster film Night Mail. The application is another example of augmented reality in which real world scenes or situations are annotated and enhanced by pairing them with web-based data. Philip Parker of the Royal Mail while talking on the occasion of the launch was excited about the new technology used in their stamps and was very excited about bringing intelligent stamps to the nation’s post. Swimsense From FINIS Monitors Performance of Swimmers Posted: 06 Sep 2010 11:55 PM PDT Any sports or work out activity requires monitoring to see if you are going in the right direction. The cyclists and the joggers have lot of gadgets already to tell them how they are doing. Swimmers require a coach or an associate who has to watch them and time them to tell them what they are doing and where they need to improve. But all that is going to change soon. The swimmers can now keep track of their aquatic exertions easily with a new product from FINIS called Swimsense. It is a small device not bigger than a watch and can be worn on the wrist. The Swimsense uses the motion sensing technology to automatically detect and record number of laps swum, total distance covered, calories burnt, lap time, pace and stroke count. After a swim the data can be accessed immediately on the device's display or it can be uploaded to your computer through USB where you can review your past 14 performances. FINIS pointed out that Swimsense is the first performance monitor in the world which is equipped with the technology to automatically differentiate between backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly. The device can be configured to a pool size and personalized as per your gender, weight and age. It will be available for retail later this year for $200. |
Eco Friendly, Energy Efficient Homes Designed For Mauritius Posted: 06 Sep 2010 11:52 PM PDT Foster and Partners designed eco friendly residences for a community called Banyan Tree Corniche Bay in Mauritius, way back in 2006. The concept was to build discreet and environmentally sensitive homes that integrate harmoniously with the lush landscape. Another aspect of the concept that makes the integration complete is the use of indigenous materials so as not to disturb the natural beauty of the landscape. Unfortunately the concept has not been turned in to reality as yet. The luxurious eco-residences were designed as part of a master plan for the Banyan Tree Cornich Bay development in La Gaulette, on the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius. Unienville & Associates Architects Ltd. partnered with Foster and Partners for the project. The homes thus designed would have views of Morne Brabant which is a Unesco World heritage Site. Indigenous recyclable materials would be used predominantly to build the homes that would feature undulating roofs that would allow natural ventilation and cross breezes. The design would be not only eco friendly but energy efficient also. There would be photovoltaic mounted on the roof and a rainwater collection system. The designers have also provided tropical vegetation within the walls. The home will blend with the environment and yet retain a contemporary look. Via: Evolo |
Ocean Adventure Lab is the Green Entry for Home Aid’s Fundraiser Posted: 06 Sep 2010 11:49 PM PDT Project Playhouse, an annual fundraiser by Home Aid has an interesting entry this year. It is called the Ocean Adventure lab. It is the result of collaboration between LPA Inc. who came up with the design and Turner Construction who actually built it. As apart of the fundraiser the Ocean Adventure Lab will be auctioned off in early September. You can have a look at it and appreciate the sustainable elements used in creating it, as it is on display at the Irvine Spectrum Centre. It was a conscious effort on the part of the designers and builders to create as much of sustainable elements as possible. The Lab was built with reclaimed and recycled materials, natural wool insulation, a composite wood structure, energy-efficient lighting and LEDs, recycled content panels and siding by Trex Accents and Black Label photovoltaic from Suntech. To encourage such green practice the local green building chapter will bestow an honorary certification with a bamboo plaque on the project team later this month. LPA estimates have put the cost of constructing the Lab between $8,000 and $10,000. It should be able to raise at least three times that amount at the charity auction on September 10, 2010. Tuned Pale Ale Tries a Gimmick With Beer Bottle and Box Posted: 06 Sep 2010 11:41 PM PDT Marketing and innovation at times simply turn into a gimmick. But some times products or packaging which is just meant to be a gimmick is well appreciated by the buying public and the gimmick soon turns into a trend. Drinking beer in itself is pretty boring. What you do with it makes it interesting. Tuned Pale Ale has come out with a beer that gives you a chance to do something constructive while boozing. You can whistle a tune by blowing in to the bottle, you can play with the bottle cap on the ridges on the bottle or if you are the rhythm guy you could try and play the drums on the wooden packaging of the bottle. When you are a bit drunk these activities not only come easy but you outright enjoy it and find it rather exciting. The quality and the taste of the beer is also ok, that is if you actually like drinking the stuff. Actually at the moment it is just a concept and has not been taken up for commercial production. But the curiosity it has generated and the attention it is drawing it will be no surprise if it is taken up for commercial production and distributed for retail. |

It’s Official! Oracle Corporation Hires Ex-HP CEO, Mark Hurd As Co-President Posted: 06 Sep 2010 07:16 PM PDT After hours of speculations and intense discussions, the owner of Sun Microsystems, Oracle Corporation, as per numerous reports has now finally announced that, the company has hired the ex-CEO of Hewlett Packard (HP), Mark Hurd in the capacity of one of the two co-Presidents for Oracle. Along with his responsibility of being the company's co-President, Mr. Hurd will also be serving on Oracle's board of directors. However, as of now this information is not available on the company website, where the previous two Presidents are still being shown till now. Mark Hurd was forced to give up the reigns of HP, after he was hit by sexual harassment case by an ex-HP contractor last month and the subsequent internal investigation found financial discrepancies as well. However, the inception of Mr. Hurd as Oracle's President isn't a shocking development as Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison had been a staunch supporter of Mark at the time of the controversy and even went to the lengths of lashing out at HP management for making a rash decision of letting Mark Hurd go. Furthermore, considering the fact that, under the able leadership of Mark Hurd, HP managed to acquire a huge position in the computer hardware industry, Oracle could definitely get a lot of advantage with Mr. Hurd's appointment, as the company is known to be struggling in the hardware division. According to Larry Ellison (CEO, Oracle Corp.),
