The launch of BlackBerry Torch could not create the kind of buzz that was expected of it. It did not get the kind of opening RIM's production is expected to generate. It is like the movies. If the box office collections on the first weekend are not above average you know it will peter out soon. Various analysts have suggested that the touch screen smart phone BlackBerry Torch could move only 150,000 units in its first two days of availability.
RBC Capital Markets and Stifel Nicolaus have arrived at the 150k figure after making spot checks for stock levels at stores over the weekend. The launch must have disappointed the manufacturers and AT&T. Goldman Sachs have also declared the launch as "underwhelming". The high profile launches made earlier have created a bench mark that is difficult to match. The bar has been raised high and if you don't go through with flying colors everyone concerned is disappointed.
By comparison the iPhone4 sold approximately 1.7 million units in the first three days of availability as claimed by Apple. Analysts have been looking for reasons for the lukewarm response. For one it is the slow corporate client adoption and the other major reason could be the imminent arrival of the BlackBerry 6 OS for older devices. BlackBerry Bold 9700, Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G will be entitled for the upgrades to the new version of the software as confirmed by RIM. The price of Torch has hit a low of $99.99 on Amazon.
