Artists Create Spontaneous City for the Birds in London
The artists at London Fieldworks have developed an innovative bird housing concept. They are calling it "The Spontaneous City in the Tree of Heaven". It opened recently as part of the Secret Garden Project by UP Projects. It is hoped that this initiative will develop into a haven of biodiversity and create a new public awareness of the ecological and cultural values. The birds of the much sought after London boroughs of Chelsea and Islington have a new option in terms of nesting space and I am sure a lot of them would like to try it out.
This spontaneous city has over 250 bird and bug boxes. In this stunning sculptural art installation the birds can choose from a range of shapes and sizes of boxes for shelter, nesting or feeding spaces. The look of these strangely organic forms that are created by stacking these distinct modular box shapes together is lovely. And the best part is that they have been woven together using elastic bands as it will allow the structure to change and adapt as the tree grows.
The design of these bird boxes have been inspired by the architecture in the nearby Georgian terraces and 1960s flats that surround the park in Duncan Terrace Gardens and Cremorne Gardens. The idea for the concept was initiated in 2008 with the Super Kingdom.
