Climate change and burning of carbon and its impact on the environment is now too well known. The answer is renewable energy and scientists all around the world have been working on it. Solar energy is one field where lot of work has been going on with some success. Even private companies have invested on projects in this field so that they could come up with commercially viable products that can collect, conserve and operate on solar energy.
EnSol is one such company based in Norway who work in the field of solar power. They have recently patented a thin film solar cell technology which is designed to be sprayed on windows of a building or even on the exterior walls to convert them into solar collectors. Unlike the traditional solar panel this technology makes the installation simpler and less expensive.
The film is composed of metal Nano particles embedded in a transparent composite matrix, and operates on a different principle as compared to the traditional silicon based solar cells. EnSol is now developing the product with help from the University of Leicester's Department of Physics and Astronomy. The results so far are very encouraging and perhaps the day is not very far when it could become possible to convert your house in to a solar collector.
