The council is responsible for the entire population of the county be it men or mice. The officials of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in South Wales recently proved that by erecting three wire walkways above a new bypass with the objective to protect the rodent population. The reaction has been mixed as the cost of the bridge is as high as £190,000. The council has been criticized for spending that kind of money to allow dormice to cross the road safely.
The Church Village bypass will open to traffic next month and the council feels that the interconnecting passages suspended from 20ft wooden poles will keep the mice away from traffic. Fiona McEvoy, from the Taxpayers' Alliance was of the opinion that the intentions are right but the costs are unjustifiably large (some people called it obscene) and less expensive methods should have been explored.
A resident of the neighbourhood, Nichola Thomas also criticized the council of ignoring more pressing problems and wasting the limited resources on the mice. But another villager, Byron Bowden had a different opinion and said, ‘Everybody talks about being greener, but when we finally are, people moan.’ The officials of the council clarified that the idea for the bridge had come from an ecological survey which was carried out in order to gain planning permission.
