The smartphone and mobile device revolution is at its peak as more and more companies dive into the foray to get a piece of this highly lucrative vertical. Be the smartphones such as the Apple iPhone 4G or mobile devices such as the likes of Apple iPad, the technological revolution has changed the way we interacted at a phenomenal pace. Understanding the vast potential in this field and finding itself nearly non existent in the mobile realm, one of the biggest names in computer chip production, Intel Corporation, has now reportedly acquired the wireless chip division of Germany based Infineon Technologies AG for a whopping $1.4 billion.
The entire deal as per sources has been conducted on cash only basis and thus has given Intel complete control over the company that was known to manufacture chips used in the incredibly famous Apple iPhone. This isn't the first of kind acquisition for Intel, as the company had also purchased mobile software maker Wind River Systems for $884 million in the year 2009. With that acquisition, Intel fast tracked the development of Moblin, an open source software designed to run on mobile devices powered by Intel processors. The Infineon acquisition has now provided Intel the platform through which the company can accelerate its plans to enter the mobile device business and with its experience in highly powerful yet energy efficient processors, Intel could in fact create a sizable competition for major mobile phone manufacturers.
